Newt and Little Rabbit Get Crafty
Making orifice hooks (shh! They are for spinning wheels)
This post is too long for email click through to read on Substack. Also click on photos to see all of them, some in galleries aren’t fully displayed.
Quick house keeping note - if you are here for poetry only you can set up what you receive by clicking on the relevant sections only. This post will go into the ‘Art Makes’ section. Deselect that section and you won’t get these posts. Visa versa don’t want poetry, deselect that section. This link takes you through the process here.
(I have been using patterns by Claire Garland from Dot Pebbles Knit for most of these little animals. She has a fab Instagram account. Shoes are sadly not made by me but from various sellers on Etsy.)
Hello Knitting Cabbage Heads,
It’s been abut month since the last escapade and I think that’s a fairly doable schedule. So hopefully another one in a months time. This time Newt and Little Rabbit heard me talking about making orifice hooks for spinning wheels. After a lot of giggling and then me explaining what they were for (fetching thread through a hole (orifice) on a spinning wheel) they decided they would like to make some. So we got the tin out.
Inside are lots of European beads and wire. The two emptied the tin, and Little Rabbit found an example to work from.

Newt cut the wire and Little Rabbit was going to bend it into shape. She was very excited though and started to twist the wire before listening to instructions and did the first one wrong.
We had a chat and she then used the correct tool
Whilst Little Ranbit was doing this Newt was busy sorting out the beads he wanted to use. Blues and a yellow. A nice choice.

Then Little Rabbit chose hers. Pinks and purples. She decided to try one of the beads on as a bracelet. Come to think of it I didn’t find it again when tidying away.

I choose mine but then went to make a cup of tea. Whilst I was away the two of them rummaged and found some wooden beads I wouldn’t have considered using. And I came back to a depleted wire stock and these.

Ribbons were next and whilst Little Rabbit messed around Newt found and chose ribbons and beads for each hook.

Making these hooks was very tiring and they rested on top of their work whilst leaving me to do all the clearing up. Obviously!
Now of course I have to photograph them all ready to list in my first Etsy shop. Thanks animals, like I have the time and inclination. 😜
Till next time peeps, Tx
(Little Rabbit is not for adoption, but I can make more on request. Newt is adoptable.)
Froglets🐸, other animals🐇🦊🦡🐭🐘🦏🦎🦥🦧etc, and other miniatures are (or will be) available in my Etsy store A Midnight Emporium. They are considered collectibles, are unsuitable for under 14s due to the wires, are not CE/UKCA tested (collectibles do not need to be), and are therefore priced as such. Or contact me here if you fancy something you see but I haven’t put in my shop. I do have ME/CFS and photographing and listing them all takes a lot of energy and is a very slow process. I do occasionally knit to order too, but be aware a froglet with a jumper takes around 3 to 4 days for me to make on average. The smaller they are the longer they take as they are more intricate and fiddly. Orifice hooks and stitch markers for crochet and knitting are available from The Purple Peapod. Thank you muchly.
If you have enjoyed my ramblings I’d love for you to click the ❤️. It pleases the social algorithm, lets others know there’s something interesting here, as well as letting me know you liked it and giving me a little virtual hug. Without virtual hugs I have been know to get sad 😜. Shares are good too and a comment buoys me up even more 😁 A comment of what you liked, what you didn’t etc would be most gratefully appreciated.
