Hello you all, and I hope you all had a Merry Christmas, Happy Yuletide, Happy Hogswatch (ifykyk), a Brilliant Saturnalia, and a Happy Holidays (threw that one in for shits and giggles). And are looking forward to the new year to come. It’s been a busy month here, taken slowly.
I don’t normally put the tree up so early in December, but this was a secondhand one we bought off Marketplace and so I wanted to check it was complete before it was too late. I did already have a plan to turn any section that had a missing branch to the back though. We’ve reverted to an artificial tree again as the real one last year, though beautiful, began to drop needles the day we put it up, and by Xmas Day was almost bare. It came down on Boxing Day and we continued to find needles for the rest of the year. I know if I moved heavy furniture I would find more needles.
Anyway, Ook helped and has now ensconced in the tree for the duration. post about that here with lots more photos.
After October’s months ‘pencil in the bathroom’, November’s ‘paintbrush on the sink’ we now haveDecember’s ‘whole raft of paintbrushes in the toothbrush mug’ and ‘unknown, small, washed out, empty bottle’. I’m feeling the bathroom is becoming a contemporary art installation.
This month was busy, as December always is, but well planned out. I rest before and after every outing. It’s takes around 4/5 days to recover back to baseline and lots of planning to make sure I don’t walk too far, or overexert myself, and R makes sure I rest well too. Our first outing was to see Travis in Leeds. I haven’t seen them since 2008 and sillily missed out on tickets last year and seriously regretted it, so this year there was no chance I wasn’t going. I loved this and was buzzing for days afterwards.
Travis the band, in concert, in Leeds on their Raze the Bar tour. After a good few days of dull the light returned. I love the hint of shadow on the wall with the pattern of the seat on it. Shadows seem to be this months theme.
This next was definitely a lesson in futility, humility, and probably many other ‘ilities’. I seriously over estimated how good my eyesight is, and the only way I will be attempting this again is if I buy some good crafting magnifying glasses in the January sales, I really could not see what I was doing and was basically guessing where to put that sharp point 😳🩸. 1mm needles with thread not yarn.
We saw 5 wee knitted animals adopted this month. Chilli and Pepper are off to Canada, Fairy Frog to the south of the UK, and Foxy off up to Northumberland. And Georgia Penguin to the US.
A week of goodbyes Somehow, I took on this ridiculous task. My friend sent me a message about a competition for a poetry book. It needed around 50-80 poems. And I took on the challenge. What possessed me I’m not sure. 🤪. Over 90 poems chosen, printed out, chopped up, ordered, reordered, typed into 5 different documents to cross reference, reduced in number, 4 new ones written - in total 66 poems themed, sorted, formatted, and indexed. Am I flipping shattered? Yes, I am. Am I a wee bit proud of myself? Yes, I am. I have zero illusions that it will get anywhere, but it was a good exercise to have done.
We didn’t need anything, we did our shopping 3 days before Xmas, but I was intrigued to see how busy the shops would be on Xmas Eve. It was surprisingly serene. I went to gather words a la
but I struggled to find many it was that calm and empty. These horrors were meant to be reindeer you put on top of hot chocolate made from frozen cream. I saw the thing on instagram and they looked wonderful. However, the making of them was not good. Oh my, how to traumatise the relatives! 😮😮😮😮😮
Lastly, a silly one. We couldn’t make out what this Xmas pressie was. Lol.
So that’s it for December. The darkest days are over and we head towards the light again, which always lifts my spirit. January and February tend to be slow and cold, hopefully frosty and crisp and not wet and dank, but I embrace the change and the potential I feel around me.
