Poetry Pals - Week 13 - Found poems

Reworking found fragments into probably not very good poems. The freedom to write shite.

Hello peeps,

This week over at

Poetry Pals

Nelly had us thinking about writing shit poetry. Sounds like a weird idea but it gave us the freedom to write anything by not worrying about the outcome.

Our task…

the challenge … is to collect up some fragments….You could do this over one day or do a couple per day. You could choose a broad ‘theme’ or ‘thing’ to write your fragments about or go completely abstract. Whatever feels most intriguing. I’m so interested to see where everyone chooses to go as well as what we write.

Then at the end of the week… see what might become of those fragments when you pull them back together. In a new order? Upside down? When you swap some of the words about. When you put one observation into an entirely new context. When they go together, and when they don’t. When you take one word from the discarded pile and put it with the others.

We’ll just have a play. And have a play at having a play with zero expectations. And let’s chat about how that feels in itself. And what we end up writing. On Friday.

In a strange universe coincidence I had started collecting fragments just the week before. The list isn’t long but was somewhat diverse, the theme being, words that struck me and/or stuck in my head. I’ve already used some of them for other poems in the making.

the world will never see you until you open your eyes.
Drastically leaning houses
Two tailed dogs
Keep it secret
Keep it safe
Leave the reader
What happens in-between
Morning teaseful feelings
become intellectually stagnant 
moss-green lake scum 
You’ve gone Starfleet!
We are all victims of physics
broken and of no use
constant drumbeat of criticism  
A prodigy in the making 
My eyes don’t work. 
Living slowly
A Weary wend 
He sang from his heart
He sang from his soul
It just made him whole
Potentilla fruticosa 'Primrose'
Don’t be late
Human hyperbole 
Suspenseful theme playing

Found Fragments

I write from my heart all
that happens in-between my
morning teaseful feelings,
becoming intellectually stagnant, 
broken and of no use.
So used to living slowly to the 
constant drumbeat of a world 
that won’t see me 
until I open my eyes
and wend a weary wend to
write from my soul.

(With apologies to Travis (the band), Harry Chapin, myself, and others I may have eavesdropped on and stolen words from their conversations this week, I’ve tried to make them a little more my own but the essence is still there.)

So, there’s an interesting ditty for you! I shall be playing with the ones I haven’t used so far over the next few weeks I’m sure.

And also, hoorah 🎉 , I hit 50 out of my 100 poems to write this year, this week.
