Quick house keeping note - if you are here for poetry and essays only pop over to my new Substack THE Shadow Mirror where I let all the angst and darkness out of their boxes to run riot.
(I have been using patterns by Claire Garland from Dot Pebbles Knit for most of these little animals. She has a fab Instagram account. Shoes are sadly not made by me but from various sellers on Etsy and I may be trying to learn how to do it myself eventually. Anyway enough of the preamble.)
Dear Spooky Knitting Cabbage Heads, this is a repost of last years Hallowe’en scene AND I’ve added in this years content. . Many of the Knitted Ones have new homes, some (especially the rabbits) are still with me.
It is All Hallows Eve and spooky fills the air. And the Knitted Ones have been busy getting ready.
Firstly, Moley and Matilda Mouse moved in some drying sunflower heads to begin setting the scene.
Ronnie and Ellie, being the ones with the biggest muscles moved in the table.
Guinea Pig and Dormouse brought the pumpkins.
Fox and Badger brought the potion bottles
Ook oversaw the proceedings, being very good at pointing and directing the minions!
Parsely and Cinnamon brought the cauldron.
Newt organised the potions on the table
And then, after everyone chipped in with more decorations and organising, the ceremony could begin. Everyone gathered to watch whilst Chilli stirred the cauldron, adding ingredients as needed, Thyme checked the recipe in the spell book, and Nutmeg raised the incantation.

Afterwards the Rabbits posed for a few pictures before helping to clear up and head home.

This year, we firstly had Áine and Rema set up a Witches Café, complete with seasonal decorations and pumpkin spiced lattes. The set up from last year did not survive the year, and I am in the process of making little rooms to set scenes in. These walls only have the undercoat on but that actually seemed right for a spooky atmosphere.

The cafe was sadly short lived as Áine and Rema set off for their new home in America. And so the Rabbits and a new Freddy Fox came in and got their decorating gizmo on. It’s been a crashy couple of weeks in the human 3 Red Cabbage land and so many Knitted Ones didn’t get to come out to play this year. I always plan too much to do and don’t get round to most of it. I’ll think of something extra for them later.
Bernard grabbed a broom when he first came into the set up amd then seemed to day dream for ages.
In the end Little Rabbit took the broom from him and used it instead. Little rabbit rather liked those eyeball decorations behind her.
Delores took a crack at reading everybody’s fortunes. She was not terribly successful but had fun trying
Freddy Fox was more into thinking about pumpkin carving (I’ve not yet worked out how to show that in knitting, the pumpkins took a long time to knit and I’m loathed to wreck them - I’ll need to find another medium at some point).
Little Rabbit got a bit bored with all the grown up goings on and took herself off to sit on the pumpkin and have a relax.
Delores and Bernard decided to try making a spell and then Freddy popped in, providing ‘helpful’ suggestions (just who is the one with the Spell Book Freddy?).

And that’s all for now. I hope your day is filled with pumpkin joy! So I’m signing off for now, till next time. If you have any suggestions for photo opportunities for the tribe, or any ideas for other animals you’d like to see, or names for the as yet unnamed, let me know below. I do post updates on Notes more regularly if you want more knitted content.

If you have enjoyed my ramblings I’d love for you to click the ❤️. It pleases the social algorithm, lets others know there’s something interesting here, as well as letting me know you liked it and giving me a little virtual hug. Without virtual hugs I have been know to get sad 😜. Shares are good too and a comment buoys me up even more 😁 A comment of what you liked, what you didn’t etc would be most gratefully appreciated.

I loved the storytelling, the spells, the seasonal festivities in such a playful way!
“Very excellent,” as Lawrence Welk used to exclaim. And an exclaimed he was! A tiny bit of one myself. Your creations are astonishingly creative and detailed. They surely cast a spell last night!
